Step off the beaten path and explore the tranquil beauty and
natural charm of the Spirit of the Suwannee hiking trails.
Each of our trails represents one of Florida’s unique native
ecosystems and is marked by an elaborately illustrated, interpretive
sign, hand-painted by our resident eco-artist, Johnny Dame. We feature
trails that wind through a moist, cool hardwood forest, a native Bay
laurel swamp, or a jungle-like oak hammock*. Perhaps you’d prefer the
sunny upland scrub habitat, a vast pine flatwoods*, or the shady banks
of the historic Suwannee River. Each has its own distinctive charm. In
order to help you decide, informational brochures with maps are
available.
Trails
are rated for their level of difficulty and accessibility. Some are
perfect for young or inexperienced visitors, while others are suited
for more skilled hikers. While certain trails are for seasonal use
only, due to changing environmental conditions, others are available
for your enjoyment year-round. Our staff will be happy to inform you
of trail conditions and direct you to the trailheads.
Guided nature hikes are offered every Saturday morning and as
posted during special events, for those who prefer to be accompanied,
or are looking for a more interpretive experience. Learn what plants
and animals live within each ecosystem and how they interconnect and
play an integral part in the delicate balance of nature. Hikers
meet in front of the SOS Café’ and depart for the trails from there.
Comfortable walking shoes, insect repellant, and drinking water are
recommended.
Whether you take a leisurely stroll in the mesic forest, a quiet
walk through native scrublands, or a brisk hike along the river,
experience the renewal of nature and surround yourself with the
soothing scents and vibrant colors of a timeless land. Breathe the
fresh, sweet air, witness the myriad wildlife, and listen to the
gentle sounds of nature, as you hike the trails and open your senses
and your heart to the magical Spirit of the Suwannee…
Note: Eventually each of the ecosystems will appear as a live
link and lead to a separate page. In-depth descriptions of each
ecosystem will be given (including pictures), along with lists of key
plants & wildlife found there. As new trails are opened we can add
them.
